Specimens (2019)
In my series Specimens, I worked for the first time with the theme of body. The sculptures are specimens, like the ones which once used to be exhibited in ethnology museums. They evoke real or fictive body parts. They might be human.
This topic started to interest me as I read about German naturalist Amalie Dietrich. In the second part of the XIXth Century, she did, as a woman with no academic background, pioneering work in Australia, collecting plants, insects, etc. and sending them back to the Museum Godefroy in Hamburg.
After a while, apparently because it was required from her employer, she started sending body parts, bones and skulls of aborigines to Europe.
Specimens are imaginary museum items. Why are they being collected? Who is looking at them?
